Whist

Classic partnership trick-taking; the last card dealt names trump.

How to play

Four players in partnerships (seats 1&3 vs 2&4). Thirteen cards each; the dealer's last card is shown and its suit is trump.

Follow suit if you can; otherwise play any card. The highest trump, or else the highest card of the suit led, wins the trick.

A side that wins more than six tricks scores one point for each extra trick.

First side to the target score wins.

Tips for Whist

  • Keep count of the trumps that have been played, because the last few tricks often turn on who has the last trump.
  • Lead from your longest suit, and when your partner leads a suit, return it where you can.
  • Do not waste your high trumps early: save them to win the tricks that matter.

Questions about Whist

How many people can play Whist?

Whist is played by exactly 4 players. Real players and bots can share a table, so a game can always start even if you do not have enough people.

Can I play Whist against the computer?

Yes. Pick easy, medium or hard bots and start straight away. Bots only use what a player in their seat could see, so they cannot peek at your cards.

Can I play Whist online with friends?

Yes. Create a private room and share its code, or join a quick match. If someone drops out mid-game, a bot takes over their seat.
