Euchre

Partnership trick-taking with a 24-card deck, bowers and a turned-up trump.

How to play

Four players in partnerships, 24 cards (9 to Ace), five cards each. One card is turned up.

In round one, players may order the dealer to pick it up, making its suit trump; otherwise any other suit may be called in round two (the dealer must call).

The Jack of trump is the highest card, then the other Jack of the same colour. The maker may go alone.

Makers score 1 for 3-4 tricks, 2 for all five (4 alone); a euchre gives the defenders 2. First to the target wins.

About Euchre

Euchre is a fast partnership trick-taking game played with only 24 cards (9 to Ace). A card is turned up and players decide whether to make its suit trump, with the Jack of trump (the right bower) and the other Jack of the same colour (the left bower) as the top two cards. Makers score for taking three or more of the five tricks, and can go alone for bigger points.

Tips for Euchre

  • Count your bowers: a hand with a bower and two or more other trumps is usually worth calling.
  • If you are the maker, lead trump early to pull out the defenders' trumps before they can use them.
  • Think twice before ordering the dealer to pick up the turned card: it gives them an extra trump.

Questions about Euchre

How many people can play Euchre?

Euchre is played by exactly 4 players. Real players and bots can share a table, so a game can always start even if you do not have enough people.

Can I play Euchre against the computer?

Yes. Pick easy, medium or hard bots and start straight away. Bots only use what a player in their seat could see, so they cannot peek at your cards.

Can I play Euchre online with friends?

Yes. Create a private room and share its code, or join a quick match. If someone drops out mid-game, a bot takes over their seat.
